Creating Still Life with Movement and Texture by Andie Freeman

Learn how to see the light, shadow and movement in a still life and make expressive marks to instill energy and life into the subject.

In this two-day workshop, students will start with an under-painting using a subtractive method to get the darks and lights along with a solid composition set. For this, we will use a fast dry oil paint. Next we will learn how to block in while keeping in mind areas that we will draw out more detail and where we will want to have larger more expressive marks for a more abstracted feel. During the workshop, the artist will demonstrate painting techniques, panel prep with oil paint ground, photographing reference material and application of gold leafing. The students will have ample time to paint while the instructor gives individualized instruction.

Andie creates still life paintings with a plein air quality. By setting up objects outside in the sun with white cloth behind them, she captures the lighting of the shadows and the movement in the wind of the objects. The paintings are about movement, light and capturing a moment in time as well as the objects themselves.

She attended College of Charleston in the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina. There she studied life drawing and painting as a studio art major. After earning her BFA from College of Charleston, she continued her art education at Portfolio Center, School for Advertising Arts in Atlanta where she studied graphic design. She worked for over fifteen years as an award-winning graphic designer in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Saint Louis before returning to her first love, painting.

Freeman’s work can be found in public and private collections, including the collection of the City of Raleigh and the Museum of Hilton Head as well as the publication, Richeson 75 Small Works 2016. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and Artspace.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If a month before the workshop we haven’t reached the minimum amount of students for the workshop to happen the workshop will be canceled and you’ll receive a full refund. Wait until you hear from us to buy supplies and plane tickets if you are flying in (or buy a refundable one if you want to get your plane ticket earlier).

If you cancel less than 30 DAYS prior to the start of a workshop, you will not receive a refund. If you must cancel in this time frame we encourage you to find a replacement, and your replacement can reimburse you for your course fee. If you cancel before the 30-day limit you will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, students who start a multiple-day class and are unable to attend any portion will not receive a refund.
