Daily Painting with Carol Marine: The Still Life

In this workshop, Carol will focus on the fundamentals of still life painting in a small format, using oil (acrylic or gouache is also acceptable). Carol’s teaching philosophy is: say it, show it, and then you try it; repeat. Towards that end, Carol will be demoing daily and talking about how and why she does what she does, and then helping as you paint. You will do fun exercises that include ten-minute-apples and “one stroke” paintings. These will help you jump-start a potential daily practice (a great way to improve!) and take a step away from fussy, lifeless paintings. If you want to paint poems rather than dissertations, this workshop is for you!

BIO

Carol Marine got a degree in art from the University of Texas in Austin. Unfortunately, she didn’t get an actual art education there, so she considers herself largely self-taught. She started painting daily in 2006 during her son’s naps. Painting small and every day super-charged her journey as an artist, and she was soon asked to teach about it. She has been teaching sold-out workshops on and off ever since, and wrote a book called Daily Painting in 2014. Carol currently lives in Missoula, Montana.

INCLEMENT WEATHER AND GLOBAL HEALTH POLICY

Workshops or classes will be canceled or rescheduled if inclement weather (hurricanes, snowstorms, tropical storms, black ice, flooding, etc.) is on the forecast, or if a global health issue (pandemic) prevents groups from gathering. SUPPLIES LIST

NOTE: We have standing studio easels for everybody (we can lower them if you prefer seating), and small clip-on lamps. If you prefer bringing your own, Carol has some good suggestions on the supplies list.

Clip-on lamp with bulb: something with an adjustable neck is preferable – you will use this to light your still life.

Things to paint: fruits, vegetables, vases, cups, plates, etc. AND solid fabric or colored paper for backgrounds (anything SIMPLE that inspires you – we’ll trade around)

Portable Easel: If you don’t have one already, you might consider Art Box and Panel Co. (I have the mini version), Strada, Easyl, or Open Box M

Paint: (bare minimum colors – I get mine from Gamblin)

  • Titanium White
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium (or, I’ve been having luck lately with Utrecht’s cadmium-free yellow and red)
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Alizarin Crimson Permanent
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue (I highly recommend Gamblin’s 1980 version of this one)
  • (Feel free to bring other colors)

Brushes: please bring some flats or brights in varying sizes, and a small filbert in addition to what you normally use (I recommend Silver brights by Bristlon, sizes 4,6,&8)

Panels: 1-3 small panels for each workshop day (6x6ish or whatever size/proportion you like – I recommend Gessobord by Ampersand – and some way to carry them home wet, especially if you are flying (raymarart.com sells wet panel carriers)

Odorless mineral spirits: I highly recommend Gamsol by Gamblin, and something to hold it in (preferably with a grate at the bottom)

Medium: optional (if traveling, I recommend Gamblin’s Solvent Free Gel, in a tube)

Paper towels: I recommend blue work towels

Viewfinder: if you have one

Palette: If your easel doesn’t include one (disposable paper palettes work well)
