Expressive Paint – exploring the landscape with David Skinner in Asheville!

$350.00

The emphasis of David Skinner’s workshop is to help students develop an expressive touch with paint and to loosen up their brushwork. The landscape is a very good vehicle for exploring paint, and acrylic paints are very forgiving when trying to paint expressively.

“The emphasis of my workshops is to help students develop an expressive touch with paint and to loosen up their brushwork. The landscape is a very good vehicle for exploring paint, and I think acrylic paints are very forgiving when one is trying to paint expressively. I like to teach in the studio instead of on location which is tougher with acrylic paints. The students will work from photographs, either their own or from a pile of photos I will provide. Each day will begin with a demo by me in which I discuss such topics as value, design, color, brushwork and line. At the end of each day, we will have a class dialogue about each other’s work, pointing out what works and what doesn’t and how to improve on certain issues in a painting. It’s a lot of fun, and hopefully, will help make students better painters.”

Youʼll be able to not only immerse yourself in a great weekend of painting but will also be able to enjoy the great city of Asheville and all that it has to offer.

David Skinner has been a painter for more than thirty years having graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1986. During his final year at the university, he received the very prestigious William Dole award for excellence in painting, and upon graduation headed to Paris for six months to work on his art and then to New York City where he was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts program at the School of Visual Arts. Feeling dissatisfied with the master’s program, Mr. Skinner left the program but stayed in NYC for ten years, painting and exhibiting his work in a number of important galleries. After leaving NYC in 1995, Mr. Skinner relocated to Los Angeles where he discovered his love of landscape painting and began focusing exclusively on the landscape of California as his subject matter. His work met with tremendous success, and after fifteen years of painting the California landscape, in 2012, Mr. Skinner moved to Ireland with his wife and two young boys to pursue his painting as an artist in residence at the Burren College of Art on the West Coast of Ireland. After living and painting in Ireland for two years, Mr. Skinner and his family decided to relocate back to the United States and ended up in Asheville NC, where he has a studio in the River Arts District. He continues to paint landscape paintings and to share his knowledge and love of painting through the many workshops he teaches including one in Ireland during the summer.
