The Language of Color and Light by Mary Bentz Gilkerson

$510.00

“In The Language of Color & Light you’ll learn to let go of your preconceptions (what you think you see), develop your ability to perceive real color based on the surrounding colors and way the light is striking, and capture the light and color of your subject – any subject. We’ll explore the secrets to creating the rich, expressive color – celebrated from the Impressionist through Contemporary painters – through the practical application of techniques that I’ve developed over nearly 30 years of teaching.”

Have you gotten frustrated by color theory?
Well, forget those complex theories.

The easiest way to discover and unlock the secret language of color and light is through direct observation and the physical act of painting. Learning this way has the added benefit of being easier to remember since most of us in the arts are kinesthetic and visual learners.

In The Language of Color & Light you’ll learn to let go of your preconceptions (what you think you see), develop your ability to perceive real color based on the surrounding colors and way the light is striking, and capture the light and color of your subject—any subject. We’ll explore the secrets to creating the rich, expressive color – celebrated from the Impressionist through Contemporary painters – through the practical application of techniques that I’ve developed over nearly 30 years of teaching.

The 19 hours of instruction include demos, short exercises, gentle group critiques, and, with a very limited enrollment, plenty of personal attention from the instructor.

Over the course of the workshop, we’ll:

Trace the use of color in Impressionism to the present,
Explore the use and properties of color, pigments, and materials,
Examine how light reveals form,
Review various approaches to color (from tonal to the modern use of color as psychological expression),
Present exercises for mixing and using paints to mix the full range of hues and create lush, sumptuous color,
Offer step-by-step demonstrations of techniques for capturing the wide variety of atmospheric effects.

The workshop begins Thursday evening with a pre-workshop wine & cheese introduction and brief lecture followed by three full painting days.
Join me for this 3-day studio painting workshop! Space is limited so register early!

This workshop is most appropriate for advanced-beginner, intermediate and advanced painters working in oils or acrylics. (Please note that this is not a plein air workshop and all sessions will be conducted indoors.)
